It is their goal to bring peace and healing to the community, the world, and charity work where it is needed. The Nirvana Temple is the real-life dream of Dr. May Trieu, located on St Thomas, US Virgin Islands overlooking Mandahl Salt Pond. Temple construction began three years ago and is still a work in progress. Engaged Buddhism is a term originally coined by Vietnamese Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh. Mindfulness meditation practiced by anyone from any religious or cultural backgrounds and at any place serves to bring inner peace. We must be aware of and enjoy the moment. Buddhism is a philosophy of life expounded by Gautama Buddha ("Buddha" means "enlightened one"), who lived and taught in northern India in the 6th Century B.C. The Buddha was not a god and the philosophy of Buddhism does not entail any theistic world-view. The teachings of the Buddha are aimed solely to liberate sentient beings from suffering. Gautama Buddha taught the four noble truths: that there is suffering, that suffering has a cause, that suffering has an end, and that there is a path that leads to the end of suffering. He saw that all phenomena in life are impermanent and that our attachment to the idea of substantial and enduring self is an illusion which is the principle cause of suffering. Freedom from oneself liberates the heart from greed, hatred, and delusion and it opens the mind to wisdom and the heart to kindness and compassion.
