Pamela J. Vittorio joins Jane today to talk about the Erie Canal, its upcoming bicentennial and the records that were created. Pamela will give a brief history of the canal and then tell us what documents we can use to research our ancestors who were involved in one way or another on the Erie Canal -- to the builders, the boat captains, the canal workers, the passengers. She'll also tell us how the centennial celebration of the canal is unfolding for next year and about the Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum. Pamela Vittorio is a Associate Teaching Professor in the Department of English Language Studies at the New School in New York City. She has completed extensive research on the Canal, on a variety of topics, for over a decade. Pamela is also on the Board of Trustees of the Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum (CLCBM) and often lectures there and at other upstate sites where she conducts workshops and programs on Erie Canal social and cultural history, language and genealogy.
