Shelley Sandiford started her scientific career hoping to someday run her own lab. Instead, she spent fifteen years in academia as a student and post-doc fellow and was subjected to more and more unstable research work. As she saw more of what it would be like to forge a career in academia, she decided to leave the field altogether, learn new skills and start her own company creating science explainer videos for magazines and digital publications.
-- Next Steps is a show about journalists figuring their career paths in and out of media. Each week, Poynter columnist Elite Truong interviews journalists who have had non-traditional career paths on their way to pursue different goals and dreams as their lives and the industry changes rapidly.
