We love fat biking, which is why we were so pumped about the race concept that Shawn Spencer and the crew from fatcross.com have been organizing for the last four years. Last weekend, on March 17th, the 4th U.S. Open Fat Bike Beach Championships was held and for all 100 riders and 1,000+ spectators the event was a complete blast. With race course features like a buried keg speed bump, a submerged tire "mine-field", sand bag bump ups and a sand S-turn bottleneck, they packed a lot of features into a short course. Beach courses definitely look like a fun style of fat bike racing that will catch on like wildfire as word spreads.

In addition to organizing the event, Shawn owns and operates Bike Cycles a bike shop in Wilmington, N.C. and works towards bicycle advocacy through the Parks and Recreation Committee and the Metropolitan Planning Committee. One thing that we're sure of is that Shawn is genuinely excited to get more people riding bikes either by selling them their dream bike, or by making bikes accessible through the local bike share program.

We had a great time talking with Shawn, and think you will too! Stop by the shop to say hi, and check out what he's up to on the following accounts: @USOpenFatTire and @Bikecycles.
