Opening in 1992, a team of Japanese visionaries visit the park every year to provide curatorial direction for the Japanese Garden, led by renowned landscape architect Terunobu Nakai until his death in 2011. It is the site of the Houston's Annual Japan Festival and demonstrates Houston's sister-city relationship with Chiba City in Japan.
