On today’s very special episode of Songmess we are joined by Chile’s mismísimo niño rosado, (Me Llamo) Sebastián! One of the most recognizable names out of Chile’s golden age of indie pop, Sebastián’s evocative and fiercely poignant songwriting has resonated with fans across the world, drawn to his honest and often theatrical takes on love, family, personal freedom and self-acceptance. (Me Llamo) Sebastián has a distinctly queer perspective that in many aspects shapes the way he approaches the world. Songs on polyamory, closeted men, sex workers and the daily perils of queer existence have made him a beacon of queer visibility in Chile’s conservative society, despite shunning the role of thought leader or activist. But Sebastián isn’t all counterculture; A poet and ethereal being at heart, his music also delves into daydreams and heartbreak, precariously balancing innocence, social awareness and emotional rawness. Our conversation with (Me Llamo) Sebastián touches on learning to use music as a way of voicing his anxieties, a rejection of traditional art valuing systems and why artists not being compensated correctly can and should take matters into their own hands. Between a few mind-expanding tokes and lots of laughter, (Me Llamo) Sebastián also curated a playlist of artists, friends and collaborators he admires that’ll get you in your feelings and singing right along. Featured Artists: (Me Llamo) Sebastián, Chini and The Technicians, Niña Tormenta, Catalina Walker, Javiera Mena, Dënver, Torreblanca and Natalia Lafourcade.
