On today’s very special episode of Songmess we are joined by Costa Rican rapper Nakury for a show all about amplifying the voices of women in hip-hop and discussing why it’s important for artists to build community instead of outright competing with each other. Nakury is a singer and MC from Costa Rica who’s been cutting her teeth in cyphers and freestyles for years. Her debut album, 2017's VIA, brought together a message of environmentalism, activism and old-school hip-hop values to get fans pondering and bopping at the same time. Nakury is part of a collective called Somos Guerreras along with Mexican rapper Audry Funk and Guatemalan MC Rebecca Lane. We also had the opportunity to snag a bit of Rebecca Lane’s time for an in-uber interview as she made her way to record a live session at Mexico’s iconic Cultura Colectiva studios. Our brief conversation with Rebecca touches on her work with Guatemala’s community of indigenous women, the implications of her own mestiza identity and why it’s paramount to continue centering women’s voices in music and entertainment spaces. This episode is all about going back to hip-hop’s activist roots, giving voice to marginalized communities and dismantling the rampant misogyny women in hip-hop face on a daily basis. The playlist was curated by both Nakury and Rebecca Lane and we guarantee the might of Central America shines throughout. Featured Artists: Nakury, Audri Funk, Rebeca Lane, Bartszo, Macha Kiddo, Maf e Tulá and Lapislazuli.
