“Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary...”

The Raven - Edgar Allen Poe

Was Edgar Allen Poe a Millwall supporter ahead of his time? Certainly the famous opening line of his poem ‘The Raven’ captures the current mood at The Den well enough. For some clubs functional survival may well be enough, but Lions fans are adrenaline junkies who demand drama. Drama, beyond all else ...

As I hobbled away from Zampa Road, dying for a nice drop of Poe’s laudanum to kill the pain of my back and that cursed match that i had just watched, I couldn’t help but reflect on what a strange business football support is. Yes i COULD have sat at home watching the match with half an eye, thanks to the modern digital miracle that gives us hundreds of TV channels showing shit to choose from.

But somehow, that would have felt fraudulent. Inauthentic even. To be sat with a mug of cocoa in the comfort of Chez Hart. Whilst five miles southwards, the Lions took their blood and thunder football to the Sheffield visitors.

Hold on.

Yes, it was the ‘blood and thunder’ part that was missing. Next time I’m copying Poe’s raven with a bit of the old ‘never more’...

ELIJAH MOORE ARTICLE link - as mentioned in the show. A fascinating piece about the origins of Millwall Rovers, Athletic and FC on the pre-First World War Isle of Dogs.
