EPISODE] The Truth About Marriage This week, on The Conscious Consultant Hour, Sam welcomes Writer, Director, and Film-maker Roger Nygard. Roger Nygard has directed TV series like The Office and The Bernie Mac Show, and edited Emmy-nominated episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm and Veep, including the upcoming seasons this year. Roger Nygard’s indie features include the notorious documentary, Trekkies, the gritty comedy-drama, Suckers, a documentary about Alien enthusiasts, Six Days in Roswell, and the spiritual documentary, The Nature of Existence — or: what’s the point of everything? The Nature of Existence, was an official selection of twenty film festivals, won multiple best documentary awards, and was released theatrically in 15 U.S. cities. Afterward, Nygard looked for a new topic, something even more inexplicable than existence itself, and only one topic fit that challenge: The Truth About Marriage, which will be screening at film festivals in 2019, and will be released later this year. Segment 1: Sam begins today’s show reflecting on the quotes from the universe and Abraham. He reminds us all to embrace the present moment rather than stress about time. Roger describes the research and interviews he did with various authors in preparation for the film. Roger traces the history of human tribal communities, mentioning Dunbar’s number, and how people are only capable of knowing so many people. He describes the role of agriculture in changing human society from nomadic tribes to fixed communities He notes how marriage originally began as a social structure to ensure men could pass on their genes and be sure their children were their own in these newly developed fixed communities. Segment 3: Sam asks who Roger found had the best relationships in his research. Roger notes that he found people have masculine and feminine energy. For Roger, the best relationships were one that had a positive balance of both energies. Roger mentions how premarital counseling can help partners understand each other before committing to marry. Roger further stresses the importance of self-understanding, communication, and acceptance in having a successful relationship or marriage.
