Help people to Like you. Start by simply remembering and using their name.

A principal reason people don’t recall names is that they weren’t listening. Someone says their name, and three seconds later, it’s forgotten.

  • This IS NOT a memory problem.

  • It IS a focus problem.

In this lecture, we dig into the importance of remembering and using people's actual names, not generic nicknames.

Some people are ok with people not using their “actual” name. Maybe you are, too. Does that mean the person you are about to meet is ok with it?

You get to decide if it’s worth taking the risk that you might irritate them by not using their name.

Mick Jagger was definitely on to something with the song "Pleased to meet you. Hope you guess my name."

I get it; the idea that it’s important to remember and use someone's name does seem a little childish.

However, when we discuss the topic of how to “help people to like you” we have to begin by being others-centred. That means we must consider the other person's feelings, emotions, and preferences before our own.
