Hey grrrlies, in this episode we jump into the history of the Riot Grrrl movement, starting in Olympia in the early 90s as a backlash to the male-dominated Punk scene. We play some songs by some women in punk in the 70s who made this all possible: the Slits, X Ray Spex, and Patti Smith. Of course we delve into Kathleen Hanna (happy belated birthday!) and her projects which defined the movement: Bikini Kill, Le Tigre, and Julie Ruin. We get into some other first-gen Riot Grrrl acts, as well as some of my suggestions for some modern-day women and non-binary folks who deserve the title of Riot Grrrls just as much. Love rock revolution girl style now!…

Today I'm playing some things that have been on heavy rotation for me the past week: some songs I stole from my sibling's Instagram, some Rolling Stone recs, and some new releases. Also, I did remember that term - UNRELIABLE NARRATOR. Yikes, this "English major" is feeling a bit fraudulent.

The Pender Guy radio collective grew out of a wave of Chinese Canadian youth activism in the early 1970s, running their operations from Vancouver’s Chinatown. Airing on Vancouver Co-operative Radio (Co-op Radio), the show explored issues related to Chinese-Canadian identity, history, politics, and art through news reporting, interviews, humour, drama, and music. Produced entirely by volunteers, the Pender Guy offered a way for young Chinese Canadians to gain community media skills and counter mainstream media representation of Chinatown and Chinese Canadians. With the City of Vancouver Archives’ recent digitization of the audio tapes, these tapes are now accessible entirely online, becoming an oral history archive of a formative period of Asian Canadian history. Join us as members of the Pender Guy share their memories on the show and play some of their favourite segments from the tapes while the community activists who helped preserve and document the show share the importance of the Pender Guy archives to the community both locally and internationally. “Inequality is not created equal,” the civil rights activist and scholar Kimberley Crenshaw once said. Experiences of racial inequality intersect at gender, class, and sexuality; and as such, these identity markers do not exist independently of each other, but rather inform each other. This intergenerational and multigenre panel of writers will share their insights and experiences of how their personal journeys as writers have influenced their craft and provided meaning on how and why they tell their stories. Grace Eiko Thomson, Larissa Lai, & Sarah Suk Moderated by Sharanjit Kaur Sandhra…
