Voting day always comes with its unique stories, doesn't it? Imagine the surprise on my face when one of us decided to write in their dad's name as a candidate! Episode 250 of Bros Bibles & Beer takes you on an introspective journey through the aftermath of the elections, mixing humor with a dash of political exhaustion. We share our personal experiences at the polls, discuss the rollercoaster of emotions these elections stirred up, and express a longing for simpler, less intrusive governance. We juxtapose our current sentiments against those from elections past, acknowledging the fatigue that comes with continuous political upheaval. As the conversation unfolds, we dive into concerns about how shifts in power might erode personal freedoms, drawing from personal stories and historical events. The atmosphere during Obama's time, with folks stockpiling supplies due to fears of drastic change, serves as a backdrop for our exploration of recent government restrictions. We dissect the Democratic Party's electoral challenges, highlighting the need for a shift in strategy beyond identity politics and media narratives. Political polarization and the intertwining of faith and politics are explored, especially regarding immigration, as we ponder the role of the church in these complex times. The latter part of the episode tackles societal shifts and the balancing act between compassion and legality in immigration. We explore how the church can navigate the rise in non-binary identities while staying true to traditional beliefs. With engaging anecdotes and humorous interludes, we venture into discussions about taxation, historical societal shifts, and the cultural phenomena shaping our world. What do you do when your beliefs collide with your ballot? Would Jesus Vote? And if so, who would he vote for? Recently Josh Howerton of LakepointeChurch gave a sermon titled "How To Vote Like Jesus". We use a couple of clips from that as a springboard into this incredible conversation. We are not on the same page in this one. Our exploration veers into the moral complexities of voting and Christian responsibility in political engagement. We wrestle with the idea of rebellion against God by not voting, dissect the notion of third-party futility, and debate the ethics of supporting a system that may contradict Christian values. With humor and sincerity, we reflect on America’s perception as a Christian nation and the divisive nature of current political discourse. As we raise our glasses in fellowship, we invite you into our community, where shared beliefs and joy in connection shine through every earnest exchange. Surprising new data is in on whether GenZ men or women are leaving the church. We dig into and get all robust with this conversation. Are young men feeling isolated, unsupported, and under constant attack in today's culture? When they turn to the church for guidance, they often find little support, leading many to seek controversial internet figures instead. Some feel masculinity has been attacked and stripped away in the social media age, yet it remains prominent in the real world. Amidst discussions on toxic masculinity, there's a perceived lack of initiatives nurturing positive masculine growth and responsibility among young men. This may be contributing to Gen Z Christian males becoming more religious than their female peers, who are increasingly religiously unaffiliated, and disillusioned potentially by abuse revelations like #MeToo and #ChurchToo. For the first time ever, young men are outpacing young women when it comes to church affiliation and religious expression. • Young men are now more religious than young women, contradicting a long-held narrative. • Young men feeling unsupported, isolated, and under constant attack, turning to controversial internet figures for guidance. • Masculinity has been attacked and stripped away in the social media age, leading to a lack of personal connection and reality. • Gen Z women increasingly religiously unaffiliated, disillusioned by #MeToo, #ChurchToo abuse revelations. • Young women leaving churches due to pastors' sexual misconduct and abuse. • Young men value traditional family life more than young women, contrasting with societal narratives promoting career success. • Complementarian churches reduce women's visibility, driving them away yet liberal denominations ordaining women decline steeply. • Conservative and liberal churches face challenges regarding growth and retention, with liberal churches struggling due to a lack of clear boundaries. In episode 246 We have presidential debate hot-takes & discuss whether, according to @ChristianityTodayMagazine , public schools are a training ground for our kid's faith. Or in Kirk Cameron's words, "We’re gonna have little kids that come back as little Marxists, little statists, little drag queens, strippers, drug dealers and, you name it” We react to the presidential debates and question how to align Christian values with candidates' stances, especially on hot-button issues like war and abortion. Politics is a mess, with confusing contradictions that leave some disillusioned and abstaining from voting, while others reluctantly vote for the lesser evil or remain genuinely enthusiastic about their candidate. "We only have so much information to go on about who that individual is, and who we want them to be. And so in the absence of information, we as humans will fill in those gaps with the things that we want." - Andy We also discuss an article on CTmagazine on sending your kids to public school that has elicited wild reactions from Christians on X.com. "Public school is like strength training for our children's faith. 'Let them wrestle with worldly counternarratives to God’s truth while they’re still under your care.' " There is lots of Us vs. Them, either-or, in or out, and Black and White thinking to be sifted through in some of the reactions but we handle it like champs. Plus we add our own insights based on our experiences in private, public, and home-school setups. Let us know what you think! Key Take Aways: • Align personal values with political candidates' stances can be challenging, especially on issues like war and abortion. • Politics is complex, with inconsistencies that lead to disillusionment and voter abstention for some, while others vote strategically. • Long-distance relationships and lack of information about candidates lead to making positive assumptions. • Public schools are seen as spiritual battlefields by some conservative Christians, promoting paganism and indoctrination over critical thinking. • Finding the right balance in exposing children to different beliefs and perspectives is crucial for their development. • Over-sheltering or neglecting children can hinder their growth; parents must carefully introduce difficult knowledge. • Polarization and fear are fueled by technology, algorithms, and scare tactics across various domains like politics and religion. • Fear stems from a lack of control, and open communication with children is essential, avoiding dictation or extremist rhetoric. This is episode 245! We highlight something good a church did! Good news. On a podcast. Who knew? Now YOU do. A teenage boy known for attending church alone, without his parents, had an opportunity to share the Gospel with his father after the church, The Alter Fellowship in Johnson City, Tennessee partnered with a national program to pay off around $8 million of the community's medical debt. Also our own Andy just saw his eldest daughter of the college. Join us as we explore the bittersweet journey of watching your oldest child leave for college—a mix of pride, nostalgia, and the ache of letting go. We reflect on the emotions, the memories, and the growth that comes with this major life transition, both for parents and their children. And finally, a new study has found “proof” that suggests that the Shroud of Turin — long believed by many to be the burial cloth of Jesus Christ — could indeed date back to the time of Christ. Is this just a click bait-y story or is something real going on here? We enlist the help of, via reacting to a video on this very story by one of Zack's favorite creators and noted Bible scholar Dan Maklelan Also some very thoughtful listener feedback. In episode 244 we are joined by Paul Gibbs, founder of Pais Movement to talk about what it looks like to live a life on a Kingdom-centric mission the way Jesus modeled it. You've heard the slogan "What Would Jesus Do?". But Paul thinks it may be better to ask, "What did Jesus do?", and then go and do likewise. Paul Clayton Gibbs is the Founder and Global Director of Pais Movement, he has planted and repurposed churches in both the UK and the USA. He travels globally providing consultancy and training to leaders. Paul is the author of several books including; ‘Talmidim – How To Disciple Anyone In Anything’. Pais Movement exists "To spark a movement where the primary mission of every Christian is to advance the Kingdom of God in the way Jesus modeled it." "Have you noticed there are two types of Christianity? While the Christian-centric gospel prioritizes personal transformation, the Kingdom-centric gospel compels us to transform our world. Both are Christianity, but one represents the kind of religion Jesus witnessed and the other, the kind He wanted. In his latest book, Kingdom Centric: Reframing Christianity, Paul Clayton Gibbs guides you through a series of awkward questions to help align your thoughts and practices to God’s true purpose for your life. When God’s people return to who He created us to be and lead others to do the same, we give God what He wants: His Kingdom on Earth as it is in Heaven. Take the free appraisal to discover how Kingdom-centric you are, and then use the ten ‘pivots’ in this book to revolutionize your relationship with God. If you have ever questioned whether the Christianity you experience is what Jesus had in mind, you will find this book revolutionary, practical, and full of insights that make sense." Brennan Manning said “The greatest single cause of atheism in the world today is Christians: who acknowledge Jesus with their lips, walk out the door, and deny Him by their lifestyle. That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable.” With multiple mega-church leaders in the headlines, including the arrest of "Bling Bishop" Lamor Whitehead for financial crimes, and Gateway Church founder Robert Morris's child sex abuse allegations, among a seemingly endless stream of others, it's not surprising that some would become disillusioned about their involvement in church and maybe even ditch their faith altogether. How have rigid doctrines and opposition to scientific advancements contributed to growing skepticism among the educated and younger generations? Is there a way for the church to reconcile with its past and present challenges to rebuild trust and relevance in a rapidly changing world? We talk about this and more in episode 239.
