×This week we review Lookwell (Pilot) Lookwell was a television pilot written and produced by Conan O'Brien and Robert Smigel, the latter of whom would become a primary creative voice for O'Brien's late night show. It starred Adam West. Despite being a "personal favorite" of NBC chairman Brandon Tartikoff (who had left that position by the time the pilot aired and was replaced by Warren Littlefield), the pilot was not picked up as a series. It was broadcast on NBC on July 28, 1991, in a summer weekend timeslot reserved for burning off pilots which the network had passed on and has since become a cult classic. It stars Adam West as a washed-up TV action hero—who at the peak of his career was ceremonially deputized by local law enforcement and falsely believes he can solve crimes in real life. His student Jason (played by Todd Field) becomes his sidekick. Written by Conan O'Brien & Robert Smigel Produced by Lorne Michaels Directed by E. W. Swackhamer A BGP / Broadway Video Production. This week we review Not Going Out (Series 12 Episode 5) Not Going Out is a light-hearted, fast-paced mainstream sitcom based around the life of a man un-burdened by ambition or drive. Lee deflects criticism and bad news with his trademark wit and one-liners but deep down he is looking for love, a steady job and a flat he can call his own. By series 7, the will-they-won't-they tension between Lee and Lucy reach new highs, with Lee eventually proposing to Lucy. In series 8 we pick up the couple's story seven years later. The pair now live in a comfortable semi-detached home in Walton-on-Thames with their three kids: Charlie, and twins Benji and Molly but how has layabout Lee survived these dramatic life-changes? Created by Lee Mack Produced by Alex Hardcastle, Nick Wood, Charlie Hanson, Jamie Rix, Richard Allen-Turner, Lee Mack, Jon Thoday, Sally Debonnaire and more Directed by Alex Hardcastle and Nick Wood An Avalon / Arlo Production for the BBC. This week we review Bob’s Burgers (Series 12 Episode 1) The show features the Belcher family. Bob, his wife Linda, and their children Tina, Gene, and Louise. Bob's Burgers is located in a green two-story building which features an apartment on the second floor where the Belcher family lives. The restaurant is sandwiched between two other commercial buildings, one of which houses "It's Your Funeral Home and Crematorium". As a running gag, the other building is shown in the opening credits to be a new business each week, often with names which are elaborate puns. This week we review Police Squad (Series 1 Episode 5) Created by David Zucker, Jim Abrahams, and Jerry Zucker, and starred Leslie Nielsen as Frank Drebin, Police Squad was first broadcast in the United States on the ABC network in 1982. A spoof of police procedurals, the series featured Zucker, Abrahams, and Zucker's usual sight gags, wordplay and non sequiturs. While a parody of many television shows and movies, it bore a particular resemblance to the Lee Marvin cop show M Squad (in particular the opening credits) and the late 1960s series Felony Squad. TV Guide ranked it #7 on it’s list of 60 shows that were "Cancelled Too Soon”. This week we review Monty Python’s Flying Circus (Series 1 Episode 1) Surrealist, observational and curiously subversive, Monty Python's Flying Circus is a sketch show not quite like any other. Mixing off-the-wall animated sequences, observational humour, innuendo and plain silliness, it often shines an inquisitive and mocking light on the established conventions and idiosyncrasies of British life, and accepted ideas and norms. It takes place behind the scenes of a fictional live sketch comedy show depicted as airing on NBC. The series' name refers to 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York City, the address of the now Comcast Building, where the NBC Studios are located. The series stars Fey with a supporting cast that includes Alec Baldwin, Tracy Morgan and Jane Krakowski. Tonally, it uses surreal humour to parody the complex corporate structure of NBC and its then parent company General Electric and has been described as adopting the manic pacing of a live-action cartoon and has been influential in its extensive use of cutaways. It also became known for its dedication to making sets extremely elaborate, once showing a set that took three days to build for only six seconds. This time we review Avenue 5 (Series 1 Episode 1) Avenue 5 has been described as "set in the future, mostly in space." On board the interplanetary cruise ship, the Avenue 5, a momentary loss of artificial gravity and accidental death of its chief engineer sends the titular vessel a few degrees off course. It's estimated it will take the ship three years to return to Earth, and with only enough supplies to sustain her many passengers for the intended eight-week long cruise, the crew of the Avenue 5 must struggle to maintain order and return the craft safely. This time we review Believe It (Series 4 Legacy) Based on 'glimmers of truth', Believe It! is the bizarre, revealing and, most importantly, untrue celebrity radiography of Richard Wilson. Celebrity autobiographies are everywhere. Richard Wilson has always said he'd never write one but he does narrate this series, weaving in and out of dramatised scenes from his fictional life story. He plays a heavily exaggerated version of himself: a Scots actor and national treasure, unmarried, private, passionate about politics, theatre and Manchester United (all true), who's a confidant of the powerful and has survived childhood poverty, a drunken father, years of fruitless grind, too much success, addiction, charity work and fierce rivalry with Sean Connery and Ian McKellen (not true). All the melodramatic staples of celebrity-autobiography are undercut by Richard's deadpan delivery. Written by Jon Canter. Produced by Clive Brill. Directed by Clive Brill. It's Kevin Eldon. Bring you a song and dance number, The Incredible Moose Human, The Great Spagboletti, A Fictional Northern Man, John Lennon's Head, The Perspective Twins, some performance poetry, Wendy Wilson's White Coat Window On The World Of World Wide Wonders, a sketch with a doctor in it and Hitler, and we're still not halfway through the first episode. Two Doors Down (Series 5 Episode 1) Comedy centred around a couple and their insufferable neighbours. Latimer Crescent residents Eric and Beth Baird are friendly, warm, and perhaps a little too polite for their own good. They're more than happy to welcome son Ian and his boyfriend into their home; but neighbours Cathy, Colin and Christine regularly make their presence felt in a far more forceful manner. Christine is a moaner, hypochondriac and freeloading single mother who's kept now-adult daughter Sophie on a short-lead of guilt trips for many years. The thoroughly pleasant Sophie finds her mother intensely embarrassing but gradually finds her own voice - and not without Beth's help. These are the trials and tribulations of living on a suburban street with people you'd often much rather do without. Written by Simon Carlyle and Gregor Sharp Produced by Catherine Gosling Fuller, Margot Gavan Duffy, Jacqueline Sinclair, Steven Canny, Ewan Angus, Myfanwy Moore, Chris Sussman, Simon Carlyle and more Directed By Simon Hynd, Sasha Ransome, Ben Gosling Fuller, Mark Ash and Carol-Anne Henderson A BBC Studios Comedy production. The Goon Show (Series 7 Episode 1) The Goon Show, originally under the title of Crazy People focused on the bizarre experiments of Prof Osric Pureheart, played by Michael Bentine working alongside Peter Sellers, Spike Milligan and Harry Secombe. After two series, Bentine left the show and as a result, a new title character was created - Neddie Seagoon. Episodes tended to involve Neddie trying to achieve some kind of greatness, often with the help of the idiotic but happy Eccles and the young Bluebottle. However, always willing to stop them and make as much money as possible were the impoverished Hercules Grytpype-Thynne and his French assistant Count Jim Moriarty. Also featuring alongside were the disgraced and flatulent Major Dennis Bloodnok, and elderly couple Henry Crun and Minnie Bannister. Between them, Alan and Philip are the focus and foil of the majority of Rigsby's many prejudices, usually at the expense of his dignity and standing in the eyes of Miss Jones, with whom he is hopelessly and pathetically in love. Lines From My Grandfather's Forehead (From 15th March 1971) Lines From My Grandfather's Forehead, is a British comedy radio sketch show, first broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 1971. Two series of eight episodes were broadcast and in addition, there were two special episodes. A Christmas special, entitled Lines From My Grandfather Christmas's Forehead and a compilation of selected items from past editions, under the title Just A Few Lines From My Grandfather's Forehead. The show was created by BBC Radio producer John Fawcett Wilson and Ronnie Barker and featured Barker together with Terence Brady and Pauline Yates and Gordon Langford at the piano. Some editions also featured guitarist Dick Abell. Each programme was a sequence of comedy sketches, monologues and comic songs. The writers were credited on each recording but the items they wrote were not named, so identifying the author of a particular item is difficult. Among the writers was Gerald Wiley, which was a pseudonym used by Ronnie Barker to submit material without using his own name whilst other writers included Jim Eldridge, Spike Milligan and Harold Pinter. The then director of programmes for BBC Radio, Gerard Mansell, described the show as having a "very individual type of humour, quite unlike that of any other TV or radio programme". Written by Terence Brady, Donald Churchill, David Climie, John Graham, Charles McKay, Spike Milligan, Peter Spence, Roger Till & Gerald Wiley. Produced by John Fawcett Wilson A BBC Radio Production.
