Why didn’t Pierre Poilievre lean into a populist, Trump-style campaign? Why do Canadians have such short memories? Is voting for the People’s Party of Canada splitting the vote, thereby giving the Liberal Party an advantage? Could a Liberal win mean a fracturing of the country? On the podcast, Meghan Murphy speaks with Viva Frei — a former litigator, former People's Party of Canada candidate, and podcaster now living in America — about all this and more. In the winter of 2022, working class Canadians stood up to ongoing and worsening government tyranny. The Trucker Convoy brought not only their convictions, but joy, hugs, dogs, hot dogs, and bouncy castles to Ottawa. Their protests ended the Covid mandates, freeing Canadians to return to their jobs and lives. The truckers changed the course of history, inspiring people around the world. Journalist Donna Laframboise was there, and spoke with many of the Convoy participants and supporters. Thank You, Truckers is the final result of the stories and interviews she gathered. Two key organizers of the Freedom Convoy , which succeeded in ending the ongoing Covid lockdowns and mandates in 2022, have been found guilty of mischief for their role in the protests. Ontario Court Justice Heather Perkins-McVey said the evidence shows that Chris Barber and Tamara Lich “encouraged people to join or remain at the protest, despite knowing the adverse effect it was having on downtown residents and businesses.” In this episode, Meghan Murphy speaks with Gord Magill, a trucker who has been following and covering the persecution of Convoy participants via his work at Autonomous Truck(er)s and his podcast, Voice of Go(r)d . In May 2021, the CBC reported that the remains of 215 children had been discovered at the former site of the Kamloops Indian Residential School in British Columbia. More such ‘ discoveries ’ at other former residential schools followed. While it is true that terrible things happened at residential schools, the headlines about these supposed “mass graves” were not . No remains had been discovered. There was no excavation. When MLA Dallas Brodie pointed out that the story was unfounded, BC Conservative Party leader, John Rustad, kicked her out of caucus. In this episode, Meghan Murphy speaks with Brodie this week about what happened. The Same Drugs is on X @thesamedrugs_ . Meghan Murphy is on X @meghanemurphy and on Instagram @meghanemilymurphy . In 2018, Maxime Bernier left the Conservative Party to start the People’s Party of Canada (PPC). The party took on that which almost none other would: the Covid lockdowns and mandates, gender identity ideology, climate change hysteria, DEI, authoritarian hate speech laws, and more. The PPC more closely resembles the populist, freedom-oriented option many Canadians are desperate for, in a sea of parties that often feel barely different from one another. Challenging the woke agenda, as well as mass immigration , has predictably led the party to be smeared as “racist” and “far right.” The party has even taken on the sacred cow that is the Canadian health care system , suggesting in its platform that Canada adopt a “mixed private-public” system to deal with the untenable wait times that have become the norm. In this episode, Meghan Murphy speaks with Bernier about about the tariff war, climate change alarmism, what it means to “stand with Ukraine,” why Poilievre appears be leaning into Liberal Light, what the Liberal Party is up to, and more. Free speech hasn’t been at the forefront of debate in Canada, but it should be. Unlike our neighbours in the United States, many Canadians have either taken free expression for granted, or simply don’t see it as very important. Only recently have some of us woken up to the limitations our government can place on our speech if we don’t make free expression a priority, and fast. Lisa Bildy is executive director of the Free Speech Union of Canada . Meghan Murphy speaks with her about Canada’s free expression laws, the government crackdown on speech, the Orwellian Human Rights Tribunals coming for unsuspecting Canadians, and where we’re headed as a country if we don’t fight back now. The generally friendly relationship between America and Canada seems to have devolved into animosity and booing during the national anthem at hockey games. As the Liberal Party plays “Team Canada,” Canadians have fallen in line—turning their rage, once directed at still-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau , towards President Donald Trump’s America. Have Canadians ruined their “nice guy” reputation for good? And did they ever deserve it to begin with? In this episode, Meghan Murphy speaks with National Post editor and columnist Terry Newman about the current state of politics and debate in North America, where we’re headed, and whether Canadians really are as nice as was assumed. Meghan Murphy speaks with Brad Skistimas , aka Five Times August . In early 2021 Skistimas saw the writing on the wall as the Covid scam was rolled out, and he used his platform as an artist to speak out, releasing a series of protest songs, like " Sad Little Man" and “God Help Us All,” pushing back against the mandates and criticizing those pushing them, including the mainstream musicians and bands who fell in line. Meghan Murphy speaks with John Carpay , a lawyer, the founder and president of the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms, and the author of Corrupted by Fear: How the Charter was betrayed, and what Canadians can do about it . In his new book, John Carpay lays out exactly how Trudeau’s Liberal government used the same techniques employed by Hitler’s National Socialist government to manipulate the public into going along with their tyrannical regime and fear-based doctrine. Failing to understand history, far too many Canadians tolerated being governed by a repressive regime and will again, if we aren’t careful. Meghan Murphy speaks with lawyer James Manson about a legal challenge to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's proroguing of Parliament. Last week, Trudeau fooled the public into thinking he resigned—instead he gave himself unchecked power by suspending all Parliamentary business until March 24, 2025. Not everyone is taking this interruption of the democratic process sitting down—the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms has provided lawyers to two Canadian citizens, David MacKinnon and Aris Lavranos, who are seeking a Federal Court declaration that Prime Minister Trudeau’s prorogation of Parliament is unreasonable and must be set aside. This conversation took place on Wednesday, January 8, 2025. The Same Drugs is a fully independent, listener-supported, non-Russia-funded podcast.
