Music On Your Own Terms 148 - Rob Balducci - Transcending A Violet Horizon Rob Balducci is a guitarist I've been listening to since the early 2000s, participating on his website forum, and downloading his lick of the week mp3s when they came out. Rob joins me in this episode to talk about how he began his professional musical journey, working at Relativity Records when Joe Satriani's Surfing With The Alien was released, and how Joe gave him pointers on the demos that became his first album Balance. We also hear about the gear companies that inspired him early on, many of whom he has had long standing endorsements with, including Ibanez, Dimarzio, and D'Addario. Rob graciously takes us through the track listing of his upcoming album Transcendence, due to be released early next year, that has been inspired by the death of his parents and how he channeled that experience into his music. Leon Todd is a guitar player, Youtuber, and teacher from Perth, Australia, who tours with his band Ragdoll, teaches clinics at guitar festivals, and has a ton of great information on guitar gear, most notably the Fractal Axe FX. We discuss Leon's history, how he has built his Youtube channel, as well as his band's following around the world, including saving for trips to the US, and taking every opportunity no matter the odds they have faced as a band. Music On Your Own Terms 133 - Cas Weinbren - The Architecture Of A Career In Music In this episode I chat to New York based keyboard player and producer Cas Weinbren of See See Beats. Cas talks about his musical upbringing, becoming trained in classical and jazz on the piano, and then diving head first into the music industry to take any opportunity that has come his way. We also learn about Cas' love of architecture and project management, and how he invests in real estate and construction projects, as well as using those project management skills to apply to his music career, whether that is in the recording studio producing music with hip hop artists or creating music for sync licensing opportunities. Finally we hear how Cas is creating new opportunities for older or more obscure musicians from the past to be discovered by new audiences with the help of sampling, as well as how he feels there is a distinct lack of transparency with streaming royalties and sync royalties alike. Music On Your Own Terms 127 - Brianna Ruelas - The Reality Of TV Talent Shows This time out I talk to realty show singing coach, Brianna Ruelas! We discover how Brianna started singing at young age, went to college for music, and got through to the top 100 on season 4 of American Idol. She gives us some tips on using TV talent shows as a tool to get your brand in front of the millions of viewers that watch the shows, and changing your mindset about the experience as a marketing tool, rather than a way to "make it". Finally Brianna shares her experiences with burn out, how being in the restaurant industry taught Brianna about entrepreneurship, and how she became a best selling author and coach in the process. Music On Your Own Terms 126 - Ivan Bodley - Am I Famous Yet? Joining me this episode, with a resume as long as your arm, is pro bass player, Ivan "Funkboy" Bodley, who has just released his memoir "Am I Famous Yet?". Ivan shares his music business history starting with college radio, and then working for Epic records, promoting bands like Living Colour. He then discusses what prompted him to go to Berklee to complete his foundational knowledge in order to play for a living instead of promoting other people's music. We hear about his gigs with Sam Moore of Sam And Dave, Bo Diddley, various on and off-Broadway gigs, as well as his more recent touring stint with the reformed Humble Pie prior to the start of the pandemic. Don't miss the Spinal Tap references, how washing dishes at a dude ranch led to buying a Fender P bass, that in turn allowed Ivan to purchase an apartment in Queens, and his grandmother's 102nd birthday! Music On Your Own Terms 125 - Martin Atkins - The Secret To Success Is Unneutered Zombie Kittens It is with great pleasure that I present my interview with the one and only Martin Atkins, drummer for Public Image Limited, Killing Joke, Ministry, his own band Pigface, entrepreneur, college lecturer, author, and international speaker. Martin talks about his journey, from his dad getting him a drum kit and setting him up with gigs, the early punk scene and joining PIL, to noticing the mismanagement of the bands, he was in and turning their finances around through merch. We learn about how Martin got into teaching students through his experiences with touring and the music business, writing books based on those classes, how that led to talking at music festivals, and the impetus of turning the collections of memorabilia from the past 40 plus years into a museum. We also find out how Ivar Bjornson, guitarist for the Norwegian band Enslaved, taught Martin the importance of saying YES, to everything. Click here for the main show notes page! Music On Your Own Terms 119 - Austin Zhang - Bravely Discovering The Sounds Of NYC In this episode I talk to Austin Zhang, a Texas native that moved to NYC to go to college, and immerse himself in the Jazz scene. We hear about Austin's history in music with guitar, then switching to saxophone and being named number one at the Texas All State Jazz competition, and subsequently being invited to play gigs in Deep Ellum, all while still in high school. We also hear about the entrepreneurial drive that most likely stemmed from seeing his parent's property investments, an experience which led him to create a production company that offers a digital venue helping local jazz artists make a living from paid streaming concerts, and help expose NY jazz to the world. Austin's story is extremely inspiring in terms of musical drive and ability, but also successfully pairing that with his business sense and entrepreneurial spirit. Music On Your Own Terms 115 - Juha Ruokangas/Ruokangas Guitars - What If? It is with great pleasure and gratitude that I present my conversation with Mr. Juha Ruokangas, of Ruokangas Guitars, Finnish luthier, innovator and life coach! Regular listeners will remember my episode with Mika Tyyskä (Mr Fastfinger) all the way back in episode 9 , who not only play's Juha's instruments, is a good friend, but also created a film about the making of a Mr Fastfinger signature guitar (with Sensai's help of course). Juha shares his journey from discovering Iron Maiden and Jimmy Page, learning to both play guitar and dismantling his very first instrument, all the way to finding his calling as a luthier from a very helpful lady at the unemployment office. We hear how Juha has continued to push innovations from being at the forefront of early websites and guitar customization apps, shunning the traditional "tone woods" in favor of locally sourced materials that inspire the player to create, as well as the Valvebucker, a tube driven guitar pickup that resembles early tube microphones, resulting in a much larger frequency range by amplifying the guitar signal at its source. Finally Juha discusses his weekly Youtube livestream where he shares his thoughts on life, mindset, and mental health, from his perspective, growing up in a relatively young country whose older generations are still affected by the trauma of devastating wars during the early 1900s, as well as the long dark winters and social pressure of not sharing your feelings. This is one of the longest episodes I have released, but is truly one of the most fascinating and enjoyable, and I am truly grateful that Juha was able to share so many valuable and insightful experiences. For the National Sexual Assault Hotline call 1-800-656-4673 or visit https://www.rainn.org . In this episode I talk to Matt Connard about his studio project War Chariot. Since the interview, it was announced that War Chariot has broken up, however Matt is planning on forging ahead with his own solo music, and I look forward to hearing what he comes up with. In this conversation, we hear how Matt got into music, how the band got started and we get deep into some Swedish death metal talk, along with some guitar nerd conversation about amp tones. Matt also shares his background in business and some killer tips for musicians to be mindful of their long term goals, and think in a more entrepreneurial way about their business. Finally, Matt shares some extremely personal experiences with mental health, addiction and a traumatic event as a child, that he attributes his former lifestyle to. This is an incredibly deep and moving conversation, and I am extremely grateful to Matt for sharing his story, in the hope that it will give anyone struggling with mental health, a ray of hope to see that you are not alone and you can get through your difficulties, no matter how intimidating they feel.
