譚醫生是在1991年時，因妻子的工作調動需要而移民來到悉尼。 當時也正值香港89年后的97民運政治動蕩時期，而且對於悉尼的印象也挺好，於是便在3個星期内匆匆地決定移民。但醫生在那個時期并不是移民專業，所以是靠妻子的雇主擔保才有機會來到澳洲。他表示以前從沒有真的想過要移民，是移民的機會選擇了他們。
