This is a story about falling in love, taking chances, and of course, Brooklyn. We met on an app in 2017 and chatted non-stop for two weeks before ever meeting in person. Immediately, we bonded over our shared love of architecture and design, and have been inseparable ever since. Although Jordan is from Las Vegas and Barry is from New Orleans, we’ve called Brooklyn home for 15 years. Our first dates were biking around Bed Stuy, admiring the beautiful brownstones and dreaming about our future home. Six months into dating, we purchased our first home together – a 130 year old historic brownstone. We know, we move fast! Our fixer-upper was in need of some major renovations but we needed to squeeze our dreams into our budget . People say that renovating a home is the most stressful thing a couple ever goes through but it became our foundation. We started our own blog and Instagram to document the renovation process and quickly built an incredible online community. We finally worked up the courage to ask one of our followers, Simply Cyn , if she wanted help with her renovation. Her “yes!” completely transformed our lives. Since then, we’ve completed over 25 projects , expanded to a team of seven, and even wrote a book , For the Love of Renovating , which is available at your local bookstore or online. Andrew Lieberman is an associate principal and design director at award-winning hospitality design firm AvroKO’s San Francisco studio. He’s worked in the hospitality industry for over 20 years. Susan Hayward is an award-winning interior designer, member of the American Society of Interior Designers and International and Furnishings Design Association, and CAPS certified by the National Association of Home Builders. A native of Toronto, Canada, Hema was a practicing attorney for several years before following her heart and pursuing a career in fashion. In 2014, she moved to Los Angeles to chase her goal, and spent the following 7 years dressing A-list celebrities, styling ad campaigns and editorials, and working with some of the top fashion talent in the world. Completely self-taught, Hema's interior design career began in 2021 when one of her styling clients asked for help decorating their home. The Textile Eye is creation of Saana Baker, a veteran textile designer with bi-coastal and international experience designing and sourcing upholstery, bedding, rugs, and tabletop. She lived and worked in New York City for many years soaking up the electric vibe of the city. The communications component that is now so closely bound to business continues to express itself in new ways within the design community, whether with showrooms, design centers, or large design markets. How to be “pitch perfect”? First, understand that writers and editors look for the special in your work, a point of view. Play Later Play Later Lists Like LikedI’m a worker. When I take anything on, I obsess about it, and stay up nights thinking about it until it comes to fruition in a special way. It’s not about a need for control or perfection. Be it a birthday party, a friend’s engagement, or an event at my kid’s school: I’m all in. I’m in with all the bells and whistles. When it comes to decorating, I either get an idea in my head and immediately realize my vision for a space, or I spend weeks thinking about what that piece of greatness will be, and then it hits me and I’m running. The most time I spend on projects is the planning phase. I pore over pictures of furniture pieces. I lay them up into mood boards on my computer. I cut them into squares and move them around. I pile fabric samples on top each other and the pictures to determine the palette and the combinations. I continue to ask if this is what my client will love: will they see it as I do, is it right, is it them ? When the foundation is there, it’s time to layer on top of it. More thinking… I always turn to books for inspiration. Whether it be my piles of coffee table design books, or my hotel books, or most often I look at wallpaper books. They give me the most inspiration for someone’s home. If ever I feel stuck, a wallpaper sample pile gets me going, and spawns something; even if I don’t use the paper. My family sees the things happening in my head all the time. My team is also precious to me. Each person who works with our clients is special and brings a unique perspective. With so many moving parts, having a flexible, very patient, smart team who can make turns on a dime is crucial to keeping projects moving in the right direction. Everyone sits right on top of one another because we’re all so dependent on each other. We tried sitting apart, and it just didn’t work. It’s part the client and their likes, it’s part us and our influences, and it’s part everything else around that just moves us. Davina Ogilvie is founder of Wovn Home, a direct-to-consumer custom window treatments company based in New York. After growing up in Bangkok, Thailand surrounded by beautiful custom window treatments, Davina was surprised to find a lack of options to choose from when she was decorating her own Manhattan apartment.
