This is a story about falling in love, taking chances, and of course, Brooklyn. We met on an app in 2017 and chatted non-stop for two weeks before ever meeting in person. Immediately, we bonded over our shared love of architecture and design, and have been inseparable ever since. Although Jordan is from Las Vegas and Barry is from New Orleans, we’ve called Brooklyn home for 15 years. Our first dates were biking around Bed Stuy, admiring the beautiful brownstones and dreaming about our future home. Six months into dating, we purchased our first home together – a 130 year old historic brownstone. We know, we move fast! Our fixer-upper was in need of some major renovations but we needed to squeeze our dreams into our budget . People say that renovating a home is the most stressful thing a couple ever goes through but it became our foundation. We started our own blog and Instagram to document the renovation process and quickly built an incredible online community. We finally worked up the courage to ask one of our followers, Simply Cyn , if she wanted help with her renovation. Her “yes!” completely transformed our lives. Since then, we’ve completed over 25 projects , expanded to a team of seven, and even wrote a book , For the Love of Renovating , which is available at your local bookstore or online. When we’re not taking measurements, laying tile, or stripping a 200-year-old bannister, you’ll find us sipping iced coffees on our stoop, taking our 10-year-old puppy, Zuko, on a walk, and of course, still biking together through our beautiful neighborhood – now as fiancés. https://thebrownstoneboys.com/ https://www.instagram.com/brownstoneboys/?hl=en…

Ariel established her firm in 2016, and has since been featured and profiled in Architectural Digest, Elle Decor, House Beautiful, Domino, Vogue, The Wall Street Journal, and New York Magazine, among others . The roots of our products are in Johanna’s native Sweden. That is where, as a young girl, she sat in her mother’s atelier as she meticulously crafted dresses by hand. Johanna learned to appreciate the quality and versatility that only hand work can achieve. And it is where she was surrounded by the clean elegance of Scandinavian design. As a young woman, Johanna took these influences with her to America to attend fashion school and then to establish herself as a successful clothing designer. Working for such companies as BCBG, Katayone Adeli, Express and Gap - her accessible designs have been worn by women all over the country. Whether gracing the pages of Vogue, an actress’ wardrobe or a special night out, her designs made women feel special. Now, Johanna has turned her eye to designing for the home. Through her travels, she has discovered incredibly talented artisans and collaborates with them to elevate their traditional craftsmanship with refined composition. Whether engaging the dyers in the highlands of Peru or the weaving families of Portugal, she envisions the possibilities of their techniques and incorporates their unique skills into her products. The result of this marriage of cultures and creativity is “a revelation” that is “simply breathtaking.” https://www.johannahoward.com/ https://www.instagram.com/johannahowardhome/…

Kevie Murphy is the founder and principal of k.a. murphy interiors, a full-service design firm focused on high-end residential interiors. In Kevie’s interiors, function dictates and informs, while beauty always transcends. Balancing both, in striking and elevated ways, is fundamental to her vision. Design wasn’t Kevie’s first career. Growing up in Port Jefferson Station, New York, Kevie went to Boston University and then attended law school. This led to her working as an Assistant District Attorney in Brooklyn, after which she entered the private sector and became a partner at a New York City firm. It was when Kevie and her husband purchased a Brooklyn Heights home that required extensive renovation, that she realized her passion for interior design and enrolled at the New York School of Interior Design. Everything has brought Kevie to this moment: her passion, her enthusiasm, and her ability to connect with people, which she uses, today, to help make people’s lives better. This starts with her own life: 1 husband, 4 kids, and 3 houses. All of which Kevie sees as “ongoing, always changing, and forever works in progress.” They’re also the perfect examples of what Kevie means when she says, “Home is your memory maker.” https://www.kamurphyinteriors.com/ https://www.instagram.com/kamurphyinteriors/…

The Textile Eye is creation of Saana Baker, a veteran textile designer with bi-coastal and international experience designing and sourcing upholstery, bedding, rugs, and tabletop. Over her 25 year career, she has helped craft lines for Schumacher, Barbara Barry, David Phoenix and Jiun Ho, and has acted as guest art director on more than a few licensed lines for name designers. Saana’s work has been used in the White House State Dining Room as drapery, and featured in publications such as Architectural Digest, Home Textiles Today & House Beautiful. Saana lives in San Francisco with her husband Matt, a NASA robotics engineer. In addition to her ongoing love affair with textiles, she spends time restoring her 1890’s Victorian fixer-upper, hosting dinner parties, and experimenting with linocut and collage. To learn more about Saana’s consulting and how you can work together, visit her website. Known for her beautiful and meticulous work, Saana Baker studied textile design with an emphasis on weaving at New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology. Eight great years in New York followed, working at domestic upholstery mills and as the Director of Woven Design for the august fabric house Schumacher. The opportunity to work with Barbara Barry then took her to Los Angeles, where she spent more than a decade actualizing the vision of this iconic and brilliant designer. There she broadened her skills to include rugs, bedding, wallpaper, dinnerware, as well as showroom and photo styling. Now, back home in San Francisco, Saana is focusing on new clients including Jiun Ho, McGuire Furniture, and David Phoenix, along with other thoughtful, creative firms and discerning private clients. Her inspirations date back to childhood. From an early age, Saana loved her grandmother’s elegant home filled with antiques and eclectic items picked up traveling as a military wife. It offered a contrasting aesthetic from her Berkeley upbringing, helmed by two iconoclastic parents devoted to paths of free-thinking and change-making. Seeing both sides helped her develop a broad set of references and an impulse to work toward balancing beauty and substance. The sense of joy found in a home filled with things that truly speak to its inhabitants is a key inspiration and guiding philosophy. http://www.saanabaker.com/ https://www.thetextileeye.com/ https://www.instagram.com/the_textile_eye/…

Designer Linda Hayslett has a strong fashion and entertainment background. A lot of her inspirations comes from her experience working at companies such as VH1, Allure, W, Details & InStyle Magazine. She lived and worked in New York City for many years soaking up the electric vibe of the city. After working in fashion on the east coast, in 2003 she made a decision to move west and become an Angeleno. Linda planted roots in Los Angeles and started to absorb the west coast atmosphere. She worked with a well known celebrity stylist and assisted in styling celebrities such as Hillary Swank, Sandra Oh, Charlize Theron, Heather Graham and more. Her passion in creativity led her to go back to school and get a degree for Interior Design at FIDM. After graduating Summa Cum Laude in Interior Design, Linda became interested in construction and planning. While Co-Designing on projects with other designers, Linda created LH.Designs. From her connections and experience in the industry, she adds an arsenal of skills along with her talents. With her knowledge, she has infused a warm touch that is often missed when clients hire only a contractor or architect for their project. She realized that offering services that tailor and integrate the designer with construction at each level of building, from concept to completion, was the best way a person would truly get the lifestyle experience that they are looking for. By infusing a construction team with design, LH.Designs can uniquely make a client's project not only aesthetically pleasing but can raise the property's value higher than expected. https://www.lhdesigned.com/ https://www.instagram.com/lhdesigned/…

I am back and, I will be slightly pivoting the message. Racism is an important part of the fibers of this country. While I will still discuss design...I will also address yt supremacy as it is designed into the fibers of this country. While I am a proud American...I am also disappointed with the death grip that yt folks have on their privilege. This is NOT an attack (although it may FEEL like it) but what it is, is an observation on casual racism. Thank you for coming to my TedTalk.…

Here are a few questions that I had for Amy: What is my “why?” I am a creative person and a business owner and I understand the necessity and the difficulties of communicating your own story well. Given my background in editorial, I felt I could demystify and simplify what it means to be “press ready" from that perspective, which is just one perspective but an important one when trying to get your message out there! Who is my clientele? Mainly interior designers. Increasingly small manufacturers and brands in the interiors industry. The communications component that is now so closely bound to business continues to express itself in new ways within the design community, whether with showrooms, design centers, or large design markets. How to be “pitch perfect”? First, understand that writers and editors look for the special in your work, a point of view. You can learn what it means to communicate that in my book, Recipe for Press: Designer Edition. But in a nutshell, pitching requires clarity, reliability, consistency and reciprocity. It is a process that takes time and valuing the process of creating relationships within the design community. Elevator pitch in three seconds. You be you, with conviction! I treasure people’s story. I always have. https://amyflurry.com/ https://amyflurry.com/products/…

It allows you to know what is NOT working and that you need to redirect on how you are going to move in a different way. Women supporting women can happen. We just need to be honest about why it is so important...is it because you are looking to get something or are you REALLY about watching women win. https://somerselle.com/ https://www.idco.studio/…

I’m a worker. When I take anything on, I obsess about it, and stay up nights thinking about it until it comes to fruition in a special way. It’s not about a need for control or perfection. Be it a birthday party, a friend’s engagement, or an event at my kid’s school: I’m all in. I’m in with all the bells and whistles. When it comes to decorating, I either get an idea in my head and immediately realize my vision for a space, or I spend weeks thinking about what that piece of greatness will be, and then it hits me and I’m running. The most time I spend on projects is the planning phase. I pore over pictures of furniture pieces. I lay them up into mood boards on my computer. I cut them into squares and move them around. I pile fabric samples on top each other and the pictures to determine the palette and the combinations. I continue to ask if this is what my client will love: will they see it as I do, is it right, is it them ? When the foundation is there, it’s time to layer on top of it. More thinking… I always turn to books for inspiration. Whether it be my piles of coffee table design books, or my hotel books, or most often I look at wallpaper books. They give me the most inspiration for someone’s home. If ever I feel stuck, a wallpaper sample pile gets me going, and spawns something; even if I don’t use the paper. My family sees the things happening in my head all the time. My team is also precious to me. Each person who works with our clients is special and brings a unique perspective. With so many moving parts, having a flexible, very patient, smart team who can make turns on a dime is crucial to keeping projects moving in the right direction. Everyone sits right on top of one another because we’re all so dependent on each other. We tried sitting apart, and it just didn’t work. It’s part the client and their likes, it’s part us and our influences, and it’s part everything else around that just moves us. This is how we build great spaces. https://www.foldingchairdesign.com/ https://www.instagram.com/foldingchairdesign/…

Davina Ogilvie is founder of Wovn Home, a direct-to-consumer custom window treatments company based in New York. After growing up in Bangkok, Thailand surrounded by beautiful custom window treatments, Davina was surprised to find a lack of options to choose from when she was decorating her own Manhattan apartment. When she turned to local upholstery shops, she found they were incredibly expensive and also required months-long lead times. On the other hand, big box retailers only offered standard sizes that were often poor quality. Rather than choosing either of these less-than-desirable options, she decided to use her previous experience from working in the New York fashion industry to create her own custom window treatments. From this experience, she created and launched Wovn Home in September 2019, offering designer-quality custom window treatments at an accessible price point. Wovn Home’s fabrics are made of luxurious linens sourced from premium textile mills in Belgium, while the patterns are designed exclusively for Wovn and screen printed in Los Angeles. The brand’s drapes, shades and pillows are produced in North Carolina through family owned workrooms that have generations of experience and knowledge in the industry to ensure a quality product. Through Wovn Home, Davina hopes to enable consumers and designers alike to create beautifully customized spaces that complement and reflect their own style and preferences.…
