David says "I remember Harry spending his gap year in Canada before he even came to the Vet School. So maybe its not surprise to find him back there now working in Vancouver. He was looking at cows and how they coped with temperature change in his gap year, but now he's back in Canada running a small animal emergency clinic - that is the joy of veterinary medicine!" Listen to hear more.…
David said, "It was a delight to bump in to Simon at the Zoological Society of London and have a chat with him, to find out how he became the pathologist at Regent's Park Zoo. I hope you enjoy the interview as much as I did!
It was so lovely to meet Vicky back in college with her two delightful children - and interesting to hear the story of where she's been and what she's done since graduating. Listen on!
It was great catching up with Heather. I remember her managing to cope with significant health issues and battling through, so it’s great to hear how her assistance dogs have propelled her into specialising in behaviour medicine - read on!
I know I'll embarrass her by saying this but it was lovely to teach Hannah when she was a student at the vet school. It was great seeing her progress as a vet in nearby Newmarket and the other practices she subsequently moved to, but it's even better to have her back working in our RSPCA clinic at the vet school where it all began! Listen to hear Hannah's story!…
David our host says "We don't have many vet students who have parents who are vets, but Tim is one. He was a great student to teach and it's been interesting to see what veterinary work he has been involved in. Perhaps unusually for many of our students he has taken up a position as a clinical advisor in a veterinary drug company - listen on to find out what drew him to what some might call the 'dark side' of veterinary medicine!"…
The host David said "I well remember Hannah from her interview at St John's a fair few years ago - I thought then she would go far, but it's my delight that though she's done a lot in clinical work and veterinary research in London and elsewhere she's now back here at the vet school in Cambridge as one of our pathologists."…
Host David Williams said "I've know Jeremy for a fair few years now visiting him in Norfolk to see animals with eye problems, but it wasn't until I interviewed him for this podcast that I found out what he did before turning to veterinary medicine and also all that he does for the profession as well as running the clinic where we works in Feltwell. Enjoy!"…
David, our host recalls his memories of our next guest, "I well remember Lucy at St John's right from the start aiming for veterinary work in the army, ultra keen on horses....so it's interesting to see where she is now. Listen on!"
Thanks for listening to our Cambridge VetCAST. This week we meet Emily Rose - a Cambridge Veterinary Medicine graduate who manages to be a really successful vet and juggles that with a growing family. Enjoy!
David says "Alex won’t like me saying this but he was a quite remarkable student, getting a paper out in Nature Communications showing from his work on transmissible venereal tumour in dogs that mitochondria move between cells, the first time this had ever been demonstrated. But as well as being passionate about science he was and still is ultra keen on veterinary practice too, spending his first year after graduation living and working as a vet in the outer Hebrides" Listen in to hear more about what he’s done and what he’s doing now!…
Hi! I'm David Williams and I lecture in veterinary ophthalmology here at the vet school in Cambridge running the eye clinic in the Queen's Veterinary School Hospital. A few months ago I was listening to 'The Animal HeartBeat' the cardiology podcast from colleagues at the Cambridge Vet School and thought that it would be a good idea to run a podcast talking to alumni from the vet school, finding out when they were here, what they are doing now and how they got from there to here, as it were. I thought that would be of interest to vet students, to vets out there in the real world and to sixth form students and others thinking of becoming a vet, to find out what sort of things vets get up to. Since having that idea I've interviewed over 20 vets who were students at Cambridge, from those in general practice, ones working in everything from labs to zoos, even ones who have gone to the dark side and entered industry! We've started with me, so listen to Jo, our Communications Manager talking to me, then each week tune in for my conversation with a different vet. Enjoy!…
