In this episode we delve into the iconic jazz label Blue Note Records which was established in 1939 by Alfred Lion and Francis Wolff. Historically, Blue Note has been associated with the “hard bop” style of jazz and recorded essential albums in the avant-garde and free jazz styles. In 1946 recording engineer Rudy Van Gelder used the living room in his parents house in Hackensack, New Jersey before building his own studio in Englewood Cliffs New Jersey. In this conversation we play a few of our personal favorites from the Jazz musicians who recorded on this classic record label. Songs include:

  1. Cannonball Adderley – Somethin’ Else
  2. Jimmy Smith – Back At The Chicken Shack
  3. Herbie Hancock -Maiden Voyage
  4. Lee Morgan -Search Of The New Land
  5. Art Blakey And The Jazz Messengers -A Night In Tunisia
