I learned quite a lot on each day, And made some great friends by the way. And all this despite Being quite old and white – Get hype for the great IEA! Helen Palmer: “Your type is an adaptive strategy to keep you secure in the world.” -Helen Palmer Identity feels like choosing but it’s really automatic When I get triggered, instead of reacting outwardly, I can center inwardly. The imagination is a true path to next levels of consciousness, if we can just get past our projections. Anchor the castle, invoke the blue fairy, then she begins to sing. Go to the part of your body that has shut down that has enabled the passion to arise. Stay with it and relax. If you have trouble going within, ask “what am I running away from?” Take up a sport and get exhausted. Apply the Enneagram to “be a tube not a bucket” to address the resistance in nine ways That is not a thought. That is the recognition capacity of your inner witness. Don’t go away from it. Go toward it. It’s just a contraction with a bunch of interpretation attached to it. Instincts in relationship workshop: All the instincts are trying to get needs met from outside. You can redirect and get them met from inside. Self-pres says “please don’t have people over for parties” Social says “sexual beats around the bush but doesn’t ask for what they need” Sexual says “social wants to be heard but rambles and doesn’t get to the point. I want intimacy but not that kind.” Overall impressions of the IEA community: The IEA community is largely old and white, and the narrative tradition is stuck in 70’s gender roles. Keep the spirit of scientific inquiry; drop the gatekeepers. In order for this community to survive into the next generation, we need to be one community, not an uncomfortable hodgepodge of a spiritual community and an academic community. The backstory about the snow shoveling argument Previous episode in this series: WCME 060: IEA 2016 part 1: Bringing a scientific mindset to the Enneagram WCME 062: IEA 2016 part 2: Using Non-Violent Communication (NVC) to have conversations that transform WCME 063: IEA 2016 part 3: 4 Perspectives on the 3 Instincts: Russ Hudson, Mario Sikora, Beatrice Chestnut, and Tom Condon You can find the IEA conference here . Here are my takeaways from the panel on the three instincts, with panelists Russ Hudson, Mario Sikora, Beatrice Chestnut, and Tom Condon. Russ: The instincts are energies in the body. Behaviors are symptoms. You want balance. Dominant instinct is your jet fuel for how you lose connection with your essence. Mario: Clusters of evolutionary behaviors. Preserving, navigating, transmitting. Instinctual bias. Preserving resources. Preserving offspring. Navigating instead of social because social incorrectly implies extroversion. Transmitting, broadcasting followed by narrowcasting. Wanting to leave an impression. Tom: Social has a group in their head. Mario: 9 strategies for satisfying 3 instinctual needs. Bea: Naranjo. 27 subtypes Tom: NLP, speaking their language. People would cycle through the subtype reactions, in life and on the same day. Russ: Sexual is the evolutionary drive. Social is awareness and care of other. The instincts will show you how you leak your life force. It’s a tool for self observation, not a new false identity. Learning your type and subtype is the booby prize. I don’t like “one on one” because all three instincts have one-on-one relationships but they all have a different flavor. I call it sexual or attraction. A social group can be of size two. There are sub instincts like self care and domesticity, and self preservation people are generally not good at both. Tom: What’s the motivation? In a small town you might be social, because you might need to rely on those people for self preservation. A car crashes into your living room and you make it into furniture. The Enneagram shows you where to fish. Bea: I say repressed instead of blind spot, it’s actively pushed down and will sometimes pop up and embarrass me. Russ: Turn these habits into alarm clocks. We must cultivate presence or else there’s no one in the drivers seat to change anything. The repressed instinct is the one were most proud of. “I did the dishes, yay!” I (Pace) wonder if the law of three could apply. Dominant is yes, repressed is no, maybe the middle could reconcile? Tom: Being conscious is overrated. Mario: I don’t think one has to be repressed. Maybe I just don’t care about preserving. Transmitters don’t navigate. Preservers don’t transmit. Navigators don’t preserve. Bea: Having a better relationship starts with having a better relationship with yourself. Tom: It’s your ego’s job to defeat the Enneagram. The Enneagram is as deep as you dare. Russ: “We talk about this stuff.” Bea: “No one talks to me about this stuff.” Russ: In the end, we’re not learning from our models. We’re learning from our humanity. Learning the Enneagram is to die to who I am moment by moment. Tom: To find your type, narrow it down and then pick the one you want to be the least. Mario: The more you learn about the Enneagram, the slower you are to type yourself and others. Here are my takeaways from Sylvia Haskvitz’s talk at the IEA 2016 Conference. It’s not about being right or wrong, it’s about needs. I made a list of every bad thing my dad had done to me. We talked. His perception was completely different. Go from “Us vs. Them” to “What are the needs?” Request vs demand. Need + person = request. A demand is when you don’t care about what the other person wants. It must be doable, for example “please respect me” is not a request. What could the other person say or do that would make you feel respected? Sibling who is an 8. “Cocky body language.” That’s not precise enough, not objective enough. Either make it objective or ask open ended questions. What need comes up for you often when you are in conflict? 1. Connect with yourself 2. Connect with another 3. Listen 4. Reflect Simple awareness automatically opens into loving kindness Previous episode in this series: WCME 060: IEA 2016 part 1: Bringing a scientific mindset to the Enneagram If you enjoyed this episode, would you be so kind as to leave us a review? A pre-conference day about science, Some differ, some shrug in compliance. There were brilliant quotations, Some great conversations, And one patriarchal defiance. Here are my takeaways from the IEA 2016 Pre-Conference Day with Russ Hudson, Mario Sikora, and Jack Killen. Belief vs. inquiry Interested is a heart quality. Actively receptive in your mind. It transcends and includes discernment and openness. The head center is the least developed. Count gyms vs. philosophy clubs “Real reason has heart in it, but the two aren’t divorced.” Enlightenment is a head thing. It’s illumination. Mental chatter is like static when the radio is not tuned correctly. The right solution is to tune it, not to turn it off. The quiet behind that static is where thinking comes from. Mario: naïve intuition vs. expert intuition Jack: don’t be too enchanted by your models. Russ: Look for the paradox. What transcends and includes both? Use the right knowing tool for the right knowing task. Fast thinking vs. slow thinking What if there are ten types? The nine we know and people for whom the enneagram doesn’t apply? “All genuine development is uncomfortable.” -Russ “Spirituality is often usurped by the ever-popular desire to become a happy baby.” -Russ “Science advances one funeral at a time.” -Max Planck Russ: don’t identify with your type With a scientific perspective, finding out you’re wrong feels like a gain instead of a loss “The heart won’t settle for anything less than the truth. ” -Russ Russ: calculus is a useful language to describe classical physics. Statistics is a useful language to describe quantum physics. What is a useful language to describe subjective experience? Tears of truth! The body creates the space for head and heart to meet. The enneagram is the circle of the unitive mind, the triangle of the discursive mind, the hexad of dynamism. Polarity: “I am my enneagram type” vs. “I am beyond all types.” Try both on at the same time. Start with a few deadly sins, Then add two, just for shits and grins. Now call it a “passion” with words out of fashion And that’s where our story begins. Cherie asks: “What if you don’t feel your Passion is true for you? I really do not identify with avarice. Does anyone else of any type have this issue? I feel healthy boundaries are important, but don’t feel I’m withholding much of anything.” Our top 3 suggestions: 1. Check yourself. Perhaps you’re not consciously aware of your False Jewel? 2. Check your type. Are you sure you’ve identified yourself correctly? 3. Learn about your subtype. Some of the subtypes can go for their False Jewels in different ways.
