Sometimes we lose a little perspective. Sometimes we miss the things that are right in front of our faces. Hopes and dreams are very good things-- granted! But for those raising a family, or hoping to raise a family, it's worth taking a step back and weighing which is the greater good: a particular dream, or the reality of what marriage and family call forth from us?

Sometimes we hear in Catholic circles that we need to be willing to sacrifice hopes and dreams for our family-- but then we often miss the fact that we do so because our family is so much more important than most other hopes and dreams: it's actually worth sacrificing for! And sometimes we miss the fact that not every hope or dream is lost in a family-- sometimes our families need us to be working toward another good so that we are at our best, sometimes we just need to tell our dreams "not yet", and sometimes we could actually include our families more in our hopes and dreams.

Which is all to say, if we want to live in a family without resentment, we need to be able to talk about our hopes and dreams with our loved ones, and be willing to pursue or not pursue them depending on the season our family is in, because ever "season" of life comes with its own "reasons" for making decisions together.
