In the Illinois Capital Rotunda, there are a series of religious displays currently out-- most significantly, a menorah, a Nativity scene, and a display for Sol Invictus that includes a crocheted serpent around crocheted apples and a copy of Copernicus' "On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres". I've heard the story mentioned a few places, and wanted to offer three notes that I've not been hearing: firstly, the iconography of the menorah and the Nativity are a lesson for how to conquer the third image of the serpent; secondly, that the Satanic Temple display ought to arouse sorrow in our hearts; and thirdly, the inclusion of Copernicus' book with the serpent is shallow and frankly absurd.

A story about the display is here: https://www.capitolnewsillinois.com/NEWS/holiday-displays-including-the-satanic-temples-return-to-illinois-capitol

Hopefully, this will all serve as a decent Advent reflection for you as well!
