Illy - Papercuts Song
Illy - Papercuts Lyrics
Welcome to accented the podcast. This series exposes English learners to real conversations between native and second language English speakers. It's important that you understand a variety of accents. In each episode, we interview a guest who has a distinct English accent. Enjoy the series, and I know that your English will improve just by listening to Accented.
Thanks for joining me for another episode of accented. Now, when I released the series on the 15th of February this year, I did mention that I would be releasing episodes on the 15th and 30th of each month. Now I have a dilemma because it is the 29th of February. There is actually no 30th in this month. So today I have a short episode with no guest, but next episode will be released on the 15th of March, and I will have a new guest. So today I just wanted to say thank you to everybody that has downloaded the Accented series. Feel free to leave me a comment asking questions. I'm happy to help you with your English learning journey.
I also want to know what accents you want to hear. I have quite a few interviews coming up. We have the Canadian accent, Mexican, Lebanese/Australian, so please just send me a message and tell me what accents you want to hear. Now I'm absolutely blown away by how many countries have downloaded the series in the last 14 days. There are over 90 countries. That is incredible. I am so pleased that the series is getting out to as many people as possible. So the top country listening to accented is India. I'm getting so many downloads from there, followed by Australia, then the United States, the United Kingdom, and then Pakistan is in fifth place. Wow. I'm just speechless.
So in today's episode, what I want to briefly talk about is idioms. Now you're all aware that I'm an English teacher from Sydney, Australia, and of course I'm very proud to be Australian and unfortunately in the last couple of months, there have been a lot of fires that have destroyed certain towns in Australia, and it's quite devastating. So I was really lucky, to attend the firefight Australia concert held two weeks ago. There were a lot of Australian bands, artists performing on the day, and all the money raised at the concert goes towards helping the people and the animals affected by the fires. And unfortunately, a lot of Australian animals like koalas and kangaroos have died during these fires and the ones that are alive need medical intervention. So we made quite a bit of money to help everyone. As I was watching the artists perform, there was this one Australian rapper called Illy who was performing a song called paper cuts, and as I was listening to paper cuts, I thought, wow. There are a lot of idioms and English phrases in this song that English learners could benefit from understanding.
In the show notes, you will find a link to the song and it's a great way to learn English is to listen to English music. And I want to go through the lyrics with you so that you understand what the meaning of these idioms are. So before you continue, pause the episode, click on the link to Illy song paper cuts, have a listen, bring up the lyrics, and then come back and press play.
