When Commodus became emperor after his father, Marcus Aurelius died, it ushered in the end of the Pax Romana, which was a period of almost two centuries of peace and prosperity. The young emperor was not ready to rule the great empire, and there was a sense of weakness from the moment he became Augustus. When he was assassinated the rule of law was also assassinated with him. It was the beginning of the last days of the empire. There were five emperors in the year after Commodus’s death, and within the following three decades the Roman Empire would be engulfed in a crisis that would change the empire forever. What are the similarities of the Roman Empire under Commodus and the United States under the reign of Joseph Biden, and are these the last days of the American Empire? Join the conversation and get answers to these questions and more on According2Sam episode #216.
