Summary
In this Current Issues podcast, Luciana R. Campos, visiting PhD student at the Balsillie School of International Affairs, discusses the topic of global food security with Brazilian diplomat, Fernanda Mansur Tansini. Tansini is currently an Alternate Permanent Representative of Brazil to FAO, WFP and IFAD and has been working with CFS for two years. The Committee on World Food Security (CFS) is the foremost inclusive international and intergovernmental platform for all stakeholders to work together to ensure food security and nutrition for all. The Committee reports to the UN General Assembly through the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and to FAO Conference. Speaking about CFS, she explains the committee’s mandate through the validity of the multistakeholder platform and highlights the relevancy and importance of its strategic framework as a forerunner for platforms for other United Nations bodies. She emphasizes the importance of civil and private sector engagement, as well as accountability for companies in the food industry and funding for its projects. In order to illustrate the importance of partnership and collaboration, she concludes by stating that this type of platform enables an exceedingly legitimate framework for the implementation of developing guidelines, as they are products of a diverse group of voices and enrich the overall decision-making process. The discussion touches on topical issues for the implementation of Agenda 2030 and the end of hunger and malnutrition. The CFS’s civil society and private sector mechanisms manifest the partnerships in need, while the High-Level Panel of Experts functions as a platform for well-informed decision making. Furthermore, products of CFS, such as the Global Strategic Framework and Voluntary Guidelines of the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Lands, Fisheries and Forests, support country-led processes to advance policies that guarantee food security.

Biographies
Fernanda Mansur Tansini is a career diplomat. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations and since 2010, after concluding her studies at the Brazilian diplomatic academy (Instituto Rio Branco), she has been working with Human Rights related issues within the Ministry of External Relations of Brazil. She worked in the Social Issues Division in Brasilia, where she led the themes related to development, population and women’s rights. She also represented the Ministry in the National Council of Women’s Rights, a multistakeholder platform that discusses policies at the national level. She also participated in negotiations in New York in the context of the Commission on Population and Development of ECOSOC. In 2013, she was posted to El Salvador, to work at the Brazilian Embassy in San Salvador. There, she was Head of the Cooperation Sector, coordinating Brazilian and Salvadorian counterparts in a number of South-South and Triangular Cooperation projects. Since May 2015 she works as Alternate Permanent Representative of Brazil to FAO, WFP and IFAD.

Luciana R. Campos is a PhD candidate in International Relations at the Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais, Brazil, funded by the Foundation for Research Support of the State of Minas Gerais (FAPEMIG). Currently, she is a visiting doctoral candidate at the Balsillie School of International Affairs, Wilfrid Laurier University, Canada. Ms. Campos’ research experience and interests include the nexus between International Politics, Development Cooperation and Public Policy, with emphasis on the research and teaching of institutional arrangements and their reforms, focusing on decision-making processes and the operational dimension of international institutions and international organizations. She has recently published on the International Relations and Political Science academy`s research over the United Nations and on the reform of the United Nations Development system.
