The government has reneged on three promises it made to post-war migrants from the Caribbean - the so-called Windrush generation named after the first boat from the West Indies to arrive in 1948 when the so called 'Mother Country' was desperate for labour. Many of these hard working people and their decendants fell foul of the government’s “hostile environment." Some were deported from the country they called home, lost their job, or were even deported. When the scandal came to light in 2018 the government promised to compensate victims but Home Secretary Suella Braverman has now u-turned on pledges to establish a migrants’ commissioner, increase powers of the independent chief inspector of borders and immigration, and hold reconciliation events.
