Welcome to "After the Game," the podcast that explores the unique journeys of athletes, coaches, and sports enthusiasts. In this episode, we're thrilled to have Vanya Koepke as our guest, whose life story is as diverse as it is inspiring. Adopted from Russia at the age of 10, Vanya found a new home in America, where he developed a passion for sports.
Despite a limited sports background in Russia—having played a bit of soccer as a goalie—it wasn't long before his older brother Tyler and his dad Paul got him interested in American sports. His journey began in the backyard, where football, baseball, softball, and basketball became the norm. By 8th grade, he joined the football team, playing as a backup receiver and backup quarterback. He also played basketball from 6th to 12th grade.
But Vanya's sports story doesn't end with his playing days. After high school, he turned to coaching, leading basketball teams while still in college, where he gained a reputation for his intensity and enthusiasm. His coaching career includes a memorable story about breaking a marker during a game!
Vanya's commitment to sports continued as he transitioned into officiating. Since 2009, he has been a basketball referee, gaining a unique perspective on the game. Last year, he achieved Level 5 officiating status and is about to start his 16th year as a basketball official. His experience also extends to volleyball, where he had the opportunity to be a line judge for a Division 1 volleyball game.
Beyond sports, Vanya has achieved significant milestones in his civic life. He served as student government president at UW-Washington County and UW-Green Bay, became a Green Bay Police and Fire Commissioner, and was elected to the Village Board of Hobart in 2022 at just 29 years old, earning re-election earlier this year.
Vanya's talents aren't limited to sports and public service—he's also a pianist at Spring Lake Church and has authored a book. He is happily married to his wife, Callee.
Tune in to hear Vanya's journey from Russia to America, his love for sports, and the many roles he has taken on. His story is a testament to adaptability, leadership, and the impact of sports on personal growth. You won't want to miss this insightful conversation on "After the Game."
