Episode # 56 Carole Ann King – Alabama Quilts, 2022 Sulzby Award Recipient November 10, 2022 _________________________________ "Quilts are Alabama Folk Art and History" Today's guest is Carol Ann King, Curator at Old Alabama Town in Montgomery (Landmarks Foundation of Montgomery, Inc.) whose book, Alabama Quilts: Wilderness through World War II, 1682-1950 (University of Mississippi Press, 2020), won the Alabama Historical Association's 2022 James Sulzby Award for best book published on the state's history in the previous two years. Ms. King discusses the decade-long community quilt survey conducted by King and her co-author, Mary Elizabeth Johnson Huff (1944-2019) – known as "Sunny" throughout the quilting community of the US Southeast that she documented throughout her career —that exposed more than 4000 historical quilts in the state. They chose over 200 to photograph and tell those stories in their lavish work.
