جنیس جاپلین ستاره‌ی موسیقی دهه شصت میلادی، را می‌توان اولین زن سفیدپوستی دانست که با موسیقی بلوز به شهرت جهانی رسید. جنیس زندگی عجیب و پر از ماجرایی را پشت سر گذراند که در سه بخش به مرور کامل آن، از قبل از تولد تا انتشار دومین سولو آلبومش با عنوان «مروارید» می‌پردازیم. این ماجرا در سه بخش تهیه شده که این قسمت با عنوان «زنی که تنها ماند – بخش اول» اولین بخش از این سه‌گانه است. در این بخش داستان جنیس جاپلین را از قبل از تولد آغاز و تا زمانی که تصمیم گرفت موسیقی را برای همیشه کنار بگذارد دنبال می‌کنیم. در قسمت بعدی ادامه ماجرا را و اینکه چه شد که دوباره جنیس به موسیقی بازگشت را بازگو می‌کنیم
