My friends, Brad and Kari Boettler, agreed to allow information from a police investigation to be shared with the public in the wake of their son's January 3rd suicide.
Evan Boettler was the best of the best. He was a stellar student, a role model, a fun kid with a sense for adventure. He loved his family, his friends and his community.
I miss him every day. He was a bright spot in my day at Aurora High School. His tragic death has been hard to accept. Like everyone else, I want him back. I want to rewind time back to the afternoon of January 3rd so that I can find a way to keep him here.
But the best thing we can do is what the Boettlers are doing. We can share his story. We can have tough conversations. We can advocate for resources to help others in these same situations. We can promote a way for tougher laws for social media platforms that might pave the way for others to prey on our children. We can be a collective voice for change.
Evan was a victim. Some evil-doers tried to extort money from him over some compromising photos. Evan did not want to bring shame to those he loved.
His life matters. It will always matter. His legacy is one that is saving lives as we speak.
