Leo Stanley, a doctor at the San Quentin State Penitentiary, was infatuated with roly-polys. He experimented on ten thousand men and women with testicle grafts and purees on primarily but not exclusively the male San Quentin prison population to achieve some fairly unclear aims, decidedly unclear results, using scientifically fallible methods. None of this stopped him from being portrayed as a force for good and a celebrity in his own time, a time when eugenics were all the rage. Stanley conducted these experiments for forty years, which is, incidentally, a little over half the amount of time California legalized forced sterilization of those imagined socially unfit in one way or another, or any way, really.
