What did the man say as he was hanging from the bridge? – “The suspension is killing me”.

What’s so funny about this? OK I’ll admit this cartoon is something that might get you “weirded out” because of the nature of the activity. The original joke had the bridge falling or collapsing on some guy who then complained that the suspension was killing him. But since I can’t actually draw cartoons myself, I have to “assemble” them using the toon-do software, I’m limited to what’s available on the program. All bridges in the program are standing, not collapsing so I’ve had to “make do”, or work with what’s available. Luckily I found a suspension bridge. This is a bridge in which the weight of the deck is supported by vertical cables suspended from larger cables that run between towers and are anchored in abutments at each end. I then added to the suspension by suspending a guy from a rope as if he was being hanged. The word play here is the expression “the suspense is killing me”, which means that the guy is dying from tension and anxiety caused by fear. “Suspense” and “suspension” sound as if they are almost the same word and they are related distantly but actually mean very different things. This does, however, remind me of the old song, “You Keep Me Hanging on.” And THAT’s what’s so funny!
