I'm having a great day: I woke up early, got out of bed, went to the bathroom. In that order.

What’s so funny about this? I just realized that this joke starts almost like the lyrics to the Beatles’ song A Day in the Life. Only in the song, after he falls out of bed, he drags a comb across his head. He then skips the bathroom all together and goes directly downstairs to drink a cup (of tea, presumably). OK they’re not that close. But let’s face it we all have pretty similar morning routines. And the elements described in the joke are extremely standard. So why is the guy so happy? The answer is provided in the last line of the joke. We learn that he woke up, got out of bed and went to the bathroom in the right or correct order. Is he serious? Could there even be a different order? Well, yes, if you are the age of this little old man. Strange things happen to our bodies as we age and sometimes we lose control over some of the body functions. Waking up for instance. Once upon a time, I’d go to bed at midnight, say, and then automatically wake up around 7:00 am. This is no longer the case; I now wake up once twice and sometimes even more times in the course of the evening. Sometimes it’s to pee and other times I just plain wake up. Then there’s getting out of bed. Time was I’d practically jump out of my bed in the morning. No more. Now days all kinds of things hurt when I wake up and I have to get up a lot more carefully and gingerly. Is it possible to get out of bed BEFORE waking up? Sure, if you’re a sleepwalker. But surely it’s not possible to go to the bathroom before waking up or before getting out of the bed? Not necessarily. Because “going to the bathroom” is also a euphemism for urinating or defecating. Sadly, this too may occur before waking, arising, or both. Then you could get out and still not wake up. Now we’re into a pretty gross area here because the guy shit in his bed and never woke up. Perhaps now it’s evident why the little old man seems so happy that everything happened in the right order. And THAT’s what’s so funny!
