My guest is a retired member of the New York City Police Department and is a trainer to police officers from many countries. He has had experience in many high profile cases including hostage cases. He explains what hostage negotiation is, why this alternative style of policing (compared with tactical policing, which is often considered the final option when all else fails) is needed to resolve crisis incidents and why it has become so prevalent in police forces since 1973. Jack explains the four things that occur (fight, flight, freeze and face) when people try to make decisions under stress and how a police negotiator can help a hostage taker to make rational decisions. He also talks about what a hostage negotiation course looks like and what qualities and training a hostage negotiator needs.
