WASHINGTON (AP) — A Democrat who supported the resolution passed by the House this week accusing the Islamic State group of genocide says overthrowing Syria's president could further endanger Christians and other religious minorities. Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard issued her warning Wednesday, a day before the Obama administration is required by law to issue its own genocide determination. The White House and State Department have said that the legal ramifications of such a designation are still being considered. In a House speech, Gabbard said the only parts of Syria where Christians and other religious minorities can worship freely are under the control of President Bashar Assad. She warned that the U.S. effort to remove Assad, if successful, "would bring about an even greater genocide of those religious minorities by eliminating the only area where they now have refuge."
