Just like the TOEFL iBT, in TOEIC, you will have the questions titled "what is the purpose of this memo/passage/email/etc." Now, in TOEFL iTP, it's a bit more difficult to answer at times, so I tell my students to skip over it. However, in TOEIC, you will get a clue by looking at the correlation between specific detailed questions and the main idea of the passage.
