And Samuel said, “Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams. 1 Samuel 15:22
Today's episode is a bit autobiographical but it is shared in the hopes that this is a common feeling many of us have at various points in our faith. A question to consider: are you taking anything in your walk with Christ and elevating it above the place that belongs to Him alone? For me (Derek) it has been at times, worship music. As a worship leader (on staff and volunteer), I have sought after "worship" itself as the end goal. A bigger platform. Finding amazing songs. Getting the church to a place of real encounter and then going after that experience week after week. And I found that chasing all of that led to burnout. Certainly burnout in worship but also in my life in general. Christ has to be first. No matter what we are going after, can we remove everything, be left with just Jesus, and still have enough? We all have that thing that we can seek which at times gets bigger than it should be.
I hope you will join me for this conversation. As always, please reach out (info@derekcharlesjohnson.com) with questions, comments, and feedback in general.
