ASK SPARROW 05: 136 YEARS AT ALPHA
Charmaine from LIverpool sends in a timely question about Alpha's origins and the role of music over the past 136 years...

Sparrow Martin takes questions about music, culture and anything else ABSR listeners have on their mind. An Alpha student in the 50s, drummer for Bob Marley, Carlos Malcolm and Jazz Jamaica, Alpha's bandmaster since 1987 adds personal anecdotes to a wealth of Jamaican history and decades of world experience for a special take on music, Alpha and even how to make rice and peas.

ASK SPARROW is produced by Alpha Boys School Radio and Alpha Institute music students.

Founded in 1880, Alpha's music program started in 1892 and has produced a long list of touring and session musicians as well as recording artists. Alpha Boys School Radio was created in 2013 to support the school, a non profit vocational school for at risk, unattached youth in Jamaica. The format is 'all Alpha, all the time." Every song has at least one past student perforning. In 2014 Alpha became a day school and now provides 150 unattached youth with academic and trade training, meidcal and social services.
