La sociedad Breakthrough initiatives, a través del programa Breakthrough Starshot, ha dado inicio a un proyecto muy ambicioso: llevar pequeñas sondas miniaturizadas al sistema estelar ALFA CENTAURI, con el objetivo de estudiar la estrella más cercana a nuestro Sistema Solar, Próxima Centauri, y a su único planeta descubierto al día de hoy, Próxima Centauri B. Este último aparenta tener abundante agua líquida y condiciones atmosféricas aptas para la vida.
