Speaker: John Selbak
Scripture: Psalm 51
Summary: The psalms provide us with words so that we might learn to commit ourselves to God in the same way as the psalmist. Psalm 51 leads us to confession and repentance for our sin. We often talk about sin in general, but Psalm 51 lead us to identify our sin with specificity, to recognize the gravity of our sin, and to beg for God’s mercy. In this psalm, we praise God for His unfailing love and the grace that wipes away our sin, while recognizing God’s power to remake us into people who are able to resist sin. We also learn that the response that God requires from us is not a sacrifice or a burnt offering, but a contrite heart, a song of praise, and just action.
