Ep. 18 - AAC, Aphantasia, & Cross-Cultural Communication (with Dr. Alyssa Hillary Zisk) - In this episode, Kara and Maja ask Alyssa about all sorts of accommodations: from their experiences as an sometimes AAC user (Assistive & Augmentative Communication) navigating university accommodations, to their thoughts on how folks make certain accommodations during cross-cultural communication vs. communicating across neurotypes, to ideas for how to better support learners who are aphantastic in schools. Don’t know what any of this means? Listen to the episode! GUEST BIO: Alyssa (they/them) is a neurodivergent researcher with too many research interests and no intention of actually narrowing it down. Right now, most but not all of their research has to do with augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) as part of their work with AssistiveWare. Outside research, Alyssa is a math teacher with the Art of Problem Solving, occasionally a neuroscience teacher at the University of Rhode Island, and an improviser at the Contemporary Theater Company. They are also on the admin team of the Facebook group, “Ask Me, I’m an AAC user! (24 Hour Rule!).” Accommodation wording discussed in ep: “Use of Alternative Communication Method in Class At times, this student may need to utilize an alternative communication method for in-class participation. The student should consult with the course instructor to determine the most effective method on a course by course basis.”
Thing of the Day: Hillary, A. (2020). Neurodiversity and cross-cultural communication. In Bertilsdotter Rosqvist, H., Chown, N., & Stenning, A. (Eds.), Neurodiversity Studies: A New Critical Paradigm (pp. 91-107). Routledge.
