This past week was a great time to be on the Columbia river for Springers. Bonneville power company dropped the water down 4ft and has made fishing conditions much better.

Willamette River: Springers are starting to be caught in decent numbers on the lower willy down by Santosh, the bite has been first thing in the morning and then dies as i believe the majority of the fish are upriver springers. Trolling herring cured in Zilla Bait has been the ticket. There has also been a decent bite in the Port as well as sell wood. Remember that this fishery is a deep water fishery and you will find these fish suspended.

Columbia river: Even after the water has dropped down to trolling conditions it still seems to be a anchor show. Cause you still can’t go slow enough for a good presentation.Find a good slow current break in 14ft or less of water. The colors seem to be green/blue/pink. I would suggest that u change your baits often when on anchor.

Lewis River: very slow but a few wild steelhead are being caught. Remember that this river is not open for Spring Chinook and as always check your laws and regulations.

Kalama River: The water is in excellent condition with a few hatchery steelhead and a occasional springer being caught. I would definitely focus down lower in the system to try and get a mixed bag. Float fishing has been the ticket with cured cured roe.

Cowlitz River: this past week Tacoma power has dropped the water and there is still good numbers of winter steelhead there as well as descent numbers of Spring Chinook. Side drifting for steelhead using Ezzy Eggs and yarn, corky and yarn as well as Beads from Lured beads. Colors to use Orange, Pink, Red. Springers love cured roe, Sand Shrimp, and Coon Shrimp on a diver backtrolled.

Chehalis River: This system is still open for steelhead but you definitely have to watch the flows. There are a few hatchery fish left but you will primarily get Wild’s.
