Andrew (Formerly known as Bigfoot) joins Kyle and Cleo in the latest Humanity of Trading episode to discuss parts work… What that means and how he has applied it to his own trading. He emphasizes the need to understand and work with different parts of oneself and shares his experience of hiring different “parts”, such as the risk manager and the thrill-seeker, to create a cohesive trading approach. By recognizing and integrating these parts, traders can improve their decision-making and overall performance. Andrew talks through the different states of mind he employs in trading before giving Cleo some insights into her own team based on a worksheet we filled out before the recording. Andrew suggests that Cleo should recognize and embrace her playful and present side in trading, and also utilize her adaptability and improvisational skills when things don't go as planned. Cleo mentions that interruptions and going off the rails are common in her work, and she handles them by validating the situation and finding a way to bring it back on track. Cleo and Kyle share their initial resistance to this approach but acknowledge its potential benefits. They explore the tension between rule-based discipline and improvisation in trading, and how to find a balance between the two. Andrew emphasizes the need to identify moments of completion in trading and transition between different aspects of one's personality. They also discuss the importance of self-reflection, accepting all parts of oneself, and confronting negative self-talk.

About Andrew:

Andrew is primarily an intra-day futures trader focused on ES and NQ. Coming from a career in creative work and a background in extreme endurance sports, Andrew found markets to be the perfect combination of technical attention to detail and mental resolve.

At Long Winter Trading Company, we believe that trading is hard.

That’s what we love about it. Trading is perhaps the most difficult career path a person can take. They must face the unknown each day and do it with their own capital with countless variables at play. We don’t expect trading to come easy. We don’t expect trading to allow you to remain in your current state. We do expect that, when mastered, trading can provide both a lifestyle and knowledge of self that is well beyond the normal person.

Thoughtful creative expression has a way of changing a person. This site is simply a mechanism for self-change and the pursuit of that which has value.
