Before Nevin Adams had “retired”, he was the Chief of Content Officer for the American Retirement Association, where he is responsible for all marketing and communications for the organization, as well as its sister organizations, ASPPA, the American Society of Pension Professionals and Actuaries, the National Association of Plan Advisors (NAPA), the ASPPA College of Pension Actuaries (ACOPA), and the National Tax Sheltered Accounts Association (NTSA).

He is still writing, speaking, and trying to help Americans have a successful and satisfying retirement just like his.

In this episode, Eric and Nevin discuss:

  • The potential impact of the upcoming election on the retirement industry
  • The importance of understanding and researching target date funds
  • Key option features of Secure 2.0
  • 401k system’s role in people’s savings and retirement
  • What is right about the ERISA 401(k), and 403(b) world. (As well as 457(b) defined contribution.)

Key Takeaways:

  • The federal government is seeking to raise money and address deficits, tax preferences for retirement savings are likely to be a target. The current retirement savings systems that have features like automatic enrollment, qualified default investment alternatives and auto-escalation is helping people save up for retirement.
  • Understanding and researching target date funds, as well as ensuring proper notices are sent out is an important key advice for new benefit managers.
  • Advisors and plan sponsors should consider the key option features of Secure 2.0 which includes student debt repayment matching, emergency savings access, and expanded tax credits for employers for opening new plans.
  • While the 401k system has done a great job helping people accumulate savings for retirement, it hasn't done as well helping them draw down those savings in retirement. However, new retirement income options are becoming available, and a growing number of employers are stepping up to help employees benefit from these options.

“If you’re a committee member, please take your job seriously. The first thing you want to do is to get educated on what your responsibilities are, what you’re supposed to be doing and how you are supposed to do that.” - Nevin Adams
