Way too many people (especially women) are addicted to being busy.

The thing is, this is how most of us were brought up. Do more, work harder, be more. Keep going no matter what. If you’re busy “doing,” you’ll be fine. Go to the gym, do side projects, and meet friends for happy hour. Keep stepping up, achieving, and doing ALL the things (plus more). And whatever you do … DON’T STOP!

Remember that time you booked a “relaxing” vacation? The kind of vacation where you had nothing to do but lounge on the beach and relax. But 2 days in, the edgy uneasiness crept in. And by day 3 you were climbing the walls. Thank god for the piña coladas or you never would’ve survived!

You learned your lesson. From that point on, even your vacations were jam-packed with things to do.

Then, in 2020 the pandemic hit, and everything shut down. If you were lucky, you still had work.

But everything else you used to do with your time was off the table. And you were forced to sit in the edgy uneasiness that comes with having nothing to do.

Nobody knew what would come next. The rules and roadmap to what you’re “supposed to do” were gone.

And each person had a choice. You could wallow in the uneasiness, drink more, slide into depression, and let the anxiety overtake you. Or you could “let go” of the old way, reimagine a new better-for-you way, and take the steps to make it a reality.

With or without a pandemic, this is how you create empowering, perfect-for-you careers and lives.

And as a Career Empowerment Coach, it’s why I love talking to people like Dora Fang. She created a whole new way of life for herself, living outside the boundaries of what we’re “supposed to do.” She went from building strategic partnerships, creating new markets, and catalyzing growth at big companies to traveling full-time in a Winnebago Navion motorhome with her black lab, Tessa.

Dora bio:

Dora Fang has 20+ years of experience in building strategic partnerships, creating new markets, and catalyzing growth at companies such as eBay and Harley-Davidson. She started an outdoor adventure business in her 20s, before going to graduate school. She loves figuring out new businesses, industries, and ecosystems (she’s worked in 6 so far, including medical devices, automotive, renewable energy, and e-commerce). Starting in 2020, she downshifted, fatFIRE'd, and is focused on enjoying adventure/nature and experiencing/learning new things.

Dora’s focus on helping women achieve self-sufficiency and self-confidence began freshman year in college while volunteering at the local battered women’s shelter. Recently in San Francisco, she’s helped with shelter operations and events for the Asian Women’s Shelter, along with grocery delivery for the local food bank. She was also on the Asian Women’s Shelter 25th Anniversary Steering Committee and a shelter volunteer/advocate. While living in Park City, Utah, she served on the Board of Peace House and as liaison to the Utah Domestic Violence Coalition. She also volunteered as a Victim Advocate for the Park City Police and Summit County Sheriff. She is often active with alumni groups, having served as Co-President of the Dartmouth Club of Utah, long-time member of Duke University’s Alumni Admissions Advisory Committee, and Young Alumnae President for Chi Omega in Washington DC. She is also a leader within Burning Man crews in California and Utah, having served as a board member of Airpusher Collective and its inimitable airship and treasurer/petrol lead for Cosmiquarium Village.

Dora earned her undergraduate degree at Duke University in Public Policy and an MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth. She is a California-certified Domestic Violence Counselor and fluent in Mandarin Chinese. In 2021, Dora moved out of San Francisco, CA into a Winnebago Navion motorhome to travel full-time with her sweet rescue pup, a 9(ish) year old black lab mix named Tessa.
