STORY 1

From WCSC

From grocery stores to markets to roadside stands, ripe peaches will soon be fully stocked across South Carolina.

The season is just getting underway, and growers are expecting a good yield this year, which is good news for fanatics of the fruit.

“If you love peaches, this is your year to get them,” Spencer McLeod, a fifth-generation farmer at McLeod Farms in McBee, said. “We’ll go all the way through September, so the end of August, and our best peaches are right in that July timeframe.”

Crews at McLeod Farms just started picking about two weeks ago, and they’re pleased with what they’re seeing in their Chesterfield County orchards.

Story 2

From the Island Packet

Andrew Davis will return to television reporting as co-anchor of WSAV News 3 for their afternoon broadcast on June 10 after less than a year as the Town of Hilton Head Island’s director of marketing and communications, according to a Monday news release.

In addition to co-anchoring the Savannah station’s 4 p.m. broadcast, Davis will also fill a new WSAV role, Lowcountry Bureau Chief. He said WSAV will expand to have two reporters covering the Lowcountry instead of one, and he will be in charge of mentoring those reporters and managing what airs relating to Beaufort, Jasper and Hampton Counties.

“This has nothing to do with the town itself,” Davis said. “This has to do with my feelings. My heart was back in the position that I was in.”

Story 3

From the Island Packet

Next year Beaufort County students might not be allowed to have cell phones while being taught, with the potential for a complete ban based on the state budget.

In a step toward anti-cell phone school policies that a growing number of states and counties are implementing nationwide, Superintendent Frank Rodriguez is set to present options at the school board meeting May 21 for a district regulation prohibiting cell phones during instruction time, meaning devices would still be allowed in hallways or between classes.

“I don’t think it’s a question of if Beaufort County school district will eventually be phone-free,” board member Ingrid Boatright said. “I think it’s a question of when.”

The school board didn’t say when or if they would vote on a regulation, only that they would “continue discussion,” with the school year ending June 5. The state may force the transition if Beaufort County doesn’t act before it.

Story 4
