Over five albums of fronting GUM, not to mention the nine he’s made as co-leader of psych cosmonauts Pond, Jay Watson’s restless imagination has treated us to some of the most sonically diverse explorations of the past decade. On his new album Saturnia, however, these visions have coalesced into the richest, but also the most coherent work of Watson’s career to date. An eternal student of sound and song, this episode I chat with GUM about taking time to write with the intention of an album in mind. We discussed never saving ideas for future releases and how for Jay, at times, Music Is Bigger Than Hair.
