Thomas Edison invented the first 'wire' in 1882. It wasn't even a wire; instead, it was a collection of copper tubes wrapped in jute! It was filled with asphalt, which provided insulation, due to its porous properties. This is because rubber insulation was not employed until 1897, and only in the power plant at Niagara Falls.
