Christ is the Light of the world, and the one believing in him shall not walk in darkness. We see in John 8-12-30 the illumination Christ gives, the intransigence of his foes, and the importance of Christ's identity. It is not intellectual difficulties that the Pharisees have, but a deep-rooted prejudice against the Lord.
