Following the arrest of Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada, a key leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, the Mexican government is facing significant challenges, both domestically and in its relationship with the United States. The arrest has led to a surge in violence in Sinaloa as rival factions within the cartel—led by Zambada's faction and the sons of Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán, known as "Los Chapitos"—engage in infighting. This internal strife has resulted in multiple homicides and has prompted the deployment of additional military forces to the region to maintain order and prevent further escalation of violence.
Politically, Zambada's arrest has created tensions between Mexico and the United States. Mexican officials were reportedly blindsided by the arrest and have raised concerns about the legality and circumstances surrounding Zambada's detention, including allegations that he was forcibly taken to the U.S. by members of Los Chapitos in a supposed betrayal. The arrest has also sparked a media and political scandal in Mexico, with accusations of corruption and collusion at high levels of government.
Furthermore, Zambada's arrest has intensified the divide between the Mexican government and the opposition, particularly around issues related to the war on drugs and corruption. The ruling party, Morena, has had to defend itself against accusations stemming from Zambada’s claims, while opposition parties have used the arrest to criticize the government's handling of cartel violence and drug policy.
